Il Trovatore

Giuseppe Verdi

Last Tickets

Whether it be Moscow or Paris, Madrid or Amsterdam, Aix-en-Provence, Berlin or Munich, in recent years the young Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov has been amazing audiences with his surprising, stimulating and unexpected approach to the opera repertoire. With his astonishing talent he is able to persuade even the greatest sceptics that opera still remains a relevant art form in the present day. He has dreamt of staging Il Trovatore for a long time. La Monnaie is now offering him the chance to give shape to this dark chronicle of tragic love, jealousy and revenge. We cannot escape our oppressive memories and nightmares. After Last season’s Les Huguenots, Marc Minkowksi will once again be conducting our orchestra in this very promising production.

Sasha Waltz

For its last dance performance of the season, La Monnaie has programmed an ambitious piece of choreography by Sasha Waltz, to music by three great twentieth-century composers: Edgar Varèse, Iannis Xenakis and Claude Vivier. She has adapted them into an impressive study of the relationships between the individual and the group, between the two individuals that make up a couple, between the couple and the group and between the individuals in the group. The contrast between black and white, with a few traces of red, dominates the stage setting.

Gerald Finley

A winter trip at the start of summer? Winterreise is a unique cycle of 24 songs that Schubert created from poems by Wilhelm Müller. Its indisputable quality makes this cycle a lasting reference for all the composers who came after him and set poetry to music. Müller’s cycle evokes solitude, a snow-covered landscape, an impossible love, and also death, a dangerous travelling companion. Several months before his death, Schubert composed some truly irresistible melodies that give these poems an apt and uncomfortable perspective. The baritone Gerald Finley and the pianist Julius Drake will perform this moving cycle.
